7 sounds like an unlikely name for software let alone the next Windows version but according to cnet this is internal name of the next windows version to be launched in 3 years.

Windows 7 was previously called Vienna.

A lot had changed in the period when vista was developed which took 5 year in the making which was marred by policy shift and priority alignment , open source never had it this good so it is interesting what changes will come with Windows 7 now that Google has thrown its hat in the ring by offering spreadsheet and documents.
