Tweak and Customize your Windows Xp

We had shown earlier how to hack, tweak your Windows Xp. Here is another one to customize your windows Xp and its called Group policy Editor, and if you didn't know about this earlier then you would wonder why didn't give this in Control panel !

How to launch it ?
Go to Start Menu > Run > Type gpedit.msc
Or Hit Windows + R and then type gpedit.msc



In this there are various options to customize and tweak not just your Windows but also components such as Task Scheduler Programs such as Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player !

This is perfect way to enable/disable features in Windows and other windows component.

Here are some of the things you can do with Group Policy Editor.

Start Menu and Taskbar options

1. Allows you to remove the Run command from the Start menu, Internet Explorer, and Task Manager.
2. Prevents users from adding the Favorites menu to the Start menu or classic Start menu.
   
3. Prevents users from shutting down or restarting Windows.
4. Removes the Taskbar and Start Menu item from Settings on the Start menu. This setting also prevents the user from opening the Taskbar Properties dialog box.
5. Prevents the operating system from recently opened documents.
6. Prevents the taskbar from grouping items that share the same program name.
7. Hide pop-up text on the Start menu and in the notification area.
8. The "All Programs" item can be removed from the simple Start menu.
9. Prevent the clock in the system notification area from being displayed.

Alt+Ctrl+Del Options

1. Prevents users from starting Task Manager (Taskmgr.exe).
2. Prevents users from locking the system.

Windows Media Player

1. Enable the Windows Media Player to be shown only in skin mode, using a specified skin.
2. Specify the MMS proxy settings for the Windows Media Player.
3. Specify that the selected protocols are used when receiving streaming media from an mms:// URL.

This is how companies and internet cafe modify Internet explorer.

Internet explorer

1. Prevents users from viewing the HTML source of Web pages by clicking the Source command on the View menu.
2. Remove the Security tab, Content tab, Programs tab, Advanced tab from the interface in the Internet Options dialog box.
3. Disable Save as from the Menu and prevents user from saving Web pages from the browser File menu to their hard disk or to a network share.
4. Prevent users from opening a new browser window from the File menu.
5. Prevent users from closing Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
6. Prevent users from adding, removing, or editing the list of Favorite links.
7. Prevent users from opening the Internet Options dialog box from the Tools menu in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
8. Prevent the shortcut menu from appearing when users click the right mouse button while using the browser.
9. Prevent users from saving a program or file that Microsoft Internet Explorer has downloaded to the hard disk.

One night stand - Use and throw mail id

We all have been through countless sign ups from simple username, email id and password to really complex ones which requires more that magic wand ! One thing that is common to all is the risk of exposing to your email id to plague of spam.

Now we could read the privacy policy each time, before sharing our mail id but whats the fun in that ?

A simple solution is have a temporary email id or a disposable mailbox that is active for sometime just to confirm that stupid mail !

Here are the places you can do just do that create a temp mail id!

Dontreg - This is as simple as it can get just add @dontreg.com the mail id you wish to give the potential spammer e.g temp.mail.id@dontreg.com then go to dontreg.com enter the id presto you get the mail !

Now because the id is not secure(ie doesn't require login) anyone can get your mails only by entering your id so choose the enter the temporary email user id wisely !


myTrashmail - If you want something a little more secure to access the temporary mail then myTrashmail is the place ! you can get the usual quick temporary mail id or the secure one ! Do remember the secure one require sign up and you need to enter a mail id !

Once signed up you can create a temp mailbox and access the mail by logging in !

More options include mailexpire, temporaryinbox and tempomail.fr

The problem with temp mail id's is that they may be blacklisted and the registration may not accept them hence you need to be on a look out for a new domain name!mailinator.com tries to address that problem by giving many domain names !

Now spam.la offers you kind of voyeuristical chance to see real time mails of the temp mail id as they come in !

How to Speed up Windows explorer or Burn CD DVD faster

Here is a simple hack to speed up any application and make it run faster whether it is Adobe photoshop, Firefox, Safari, Windows explorer, Or Burn CD / DVD with Nero faster !

You can speed up an Application by setting the priority of the process in the Windows Task Manager.

Step 1
-------
To access the task Manager you can either press Alt + Ctrl + Del or right click on the task bar and choose Task Managar.

Go to the Processes tab and Choose the Process under the Image name column. This could be tricky sometimes since the process name may a little different that usual for example Microsoft Word will be listed as Winword.exe

Here are some of the common Application and their process name:-

Nero - NeroStartSmart.exe
Windows Explorer- Explorer.exe
FireFox - FireFox.exe
Microsoft Frontpage - Frontpg.exe

Step 2
-------

Right click on the process you want to speed up and choose Set Priorityand choose High.

You get a Warning, just agree to it

Now you computer will give the process from that application priority. By doing this you can reduce the CD writing time or speed up an application.

Account details of 1200 users leaked in Ebay Forum

A hacker apparently posted details of 1200 users including Credit card details, it was immediately take off as expected. eBay verified that the names and contact information was accurate but they also claimed that the credit card numbers given in that post wdid not match eBay or PayPal had on file for those users.

An eBay spokeswoman said the posts were most likely due to account hijacks and dismissed a security breach.

eBay said that it is contacting those users whose details were posted so that they can “take the steps they need to protect themselves,”.

Set Custom Display resolution for user in Winxp

Now this one nagging feature of Win xp that when one user sets the display screen resolution it is set for all users ! For example your father may like higher resolution for reading stuff but your younger bro plays games and wants 800 x 600 , and it becomes irritating for not being able to a custom display.

Here is a simple solution :-

1) First download this - MultiRes

Don't worry its safe (tested on my crash test laptop)




This is quick resolution changer, that can change the resolution setting in one click. For most of us this should do !

But we are taking this a step further to automate the changing process as soon as the user logs in by batch files (yeah it is safe too !)
2) Download This - Changeres batch files

In this zip file you get 3 resolution settings at color depth 32 (you can edit them in notepad for the setting you want eg refresh rate / color depth etc)


Here comes the auto settings part !

3) Copy/extract the settings file wanted to the startup folder of the user

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Replace the username with the windows user name you want and paste the correct settings file.

4) Done ! Next time you login to that username the batch file will be lauched and will change the setting automatically.

To remove this just delete the file from the above mentioned folder !

Install Firefox Theme /Plug-in / Addons for multi users

Now most of you using firefox are likely to have many users on your Windows. And installing a theme or a plug-in meant only that user use it, since by default extensions/ Add-ons are installed for the current user only.

Now to install these Add-ons to multi users or all Win users you might had to download them again individually to different which is so not required. Mozilla had suggested some way to deal with it but I find the following method so much easier it is just copy paste.

Find out where your profile folder is (depends on the operating system)

Now I am showing for Windows Xp (cuz my stat shows most of you guys have win xp but you can modify easily for your OS)

1) Go to the profile folder of the user where the Add-ons are installed.

In win xp -

C:\Documents and Settings\(Windows login/user name)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Now replace the (Windows login/user name) with the user name where the Add-on is installed.

If you are going to browse rather than enter the path then make sure that "Show hidden files and folder is chosen" in your windows explorer. You can do that by going to Tool > Folder Option >




2) Now go to the folder which has .default


3) Now go to the extensions folder




4) Copy the extensions in the extensions folder

Now Copy the extention you want to install in other users. Now if you are not able recognize extension is which the I recommend that you copy all, since you can uninstall that you don't want later in the user's firefox !



5) Now go to the Profile folder of the user to which you want to install

In win xp -
C:\Documents and Settings\user2\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Now replace user2 with the user name where the Add-on needs to be installed.

6) Repeat step 2 and 3

7) Paste the extentions



8) Log on to the user2 account and launch the firefox

Now if you have a lot of extentions / themes then firefox take a while to install but eventually it will.

Go to Tools > Add-Ons

And you can disable or uninstall the extensions you don't want !

You can repeat the procedure if you have many users.

9) Restart your computer.

Troubleshooting

1) If you get Cannot find the Server at any time then might have entered the username wrongly or entered the path wrongly.

2) If you are browsing for the Mozilla folder (in Application Data )and are unable to find. Most likely firefox was never run, log on to the user and run firefox and you should find it.

3) You are getting "access" denied when trying access the folder, use a account that has Administrative autority.

How To get Flash Header - My First Blogger Hack

It was hardly a week and I was getting bored of the header in blogger. It was unreal to think it is just a text or plain image ! In this age of jazzy looking headers this was pathetic !

So went out for a simple blogger hack. Here's a Tut for you.

Warning: This is long and possibly boring tutorial. You are responsible for your own action and if your blog acts funny or goes up in flames I am not responsible. Blame it on Weapons of mass Distruction. A coke could be handy during this tutorial.

Even if you are going to put a flash header you need to first upload a image header( dummy image) and choose the following settings.

Step 1



Step 2



Note: If you are uploading the image header for the first time than the "Placement" option will not be visible as soon as you upload one. Close the window and repeat step 1.

Step 3

Now comes the embedding part. Go to Template -> Edit Html

Then click on Expand Widget Templates



COPY THE WHOLE TEMPLATE TO A NOTEPAD AND SAVE IT IF THINGS GO BAD YOU CAN ALWAYS PASTE AND GO BACK T0 DEFAULT.


Now the default templates have too many waste space on either side of the bog so first you need to decrease that so that you can insert a big header.

Step 4

Under the edit template search for "#header-wrapper" (by Ctrl + F.... duh !)

This is the code which gives the header-wrapper attributes

#header-wrapper {
width:670px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid $bordercolor;
}

Now I wanted a atleast 800 px width and I didnt like the border so I changed to

#header-wrapper {
width:800px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:0px solid $bordercolor;
}


Step 5

I dont want even the the header border (by default there are 2)

So search for "#header { "

#header { margin: 5px; border: 1px solid $bordercolor; text-align: center; color:$pagetitlecolor; }

Changed it to :-

#header { margin: 5px; border: 0px solid $bordercolor; text-align: center; color:$pagetitlecolor; }

Now check out the preview.

Step 6

Now if you need to increase the width of the blog. This is how you do it to Increase blog width :-

Search for the string "#outer-wrapper { "

#outer-wrapper { width: 760px; margin:0 auto; padding:10px; text-align:left; font: $bodyfont; }

I Changed it to:-

#outer-wrapper { width: 900px; margin:0 auto; padding:10px; text-align:left; font: $bodyfont; }


Step 7

To decrease the width between the main blog and the sidebar

Then Search for the string "#main-wrapper { "

#main-wrapper { width: 410px; float: left;

Change it to

#main-wrapper { width: 510px; float: left;

Step 8

Press Preview to check it out. Never Press Save Template until you are absolutely sure about the changes.

If everything looks smooth like a baby's bottom then lets go to the next step !

Step 9

Now we start to embed the flash header. (Finally! The pop-corn were almost over)

You need to host the flash header, choose a flash header that lets you hotlink and gives you the full file address (eg http://somebloodyfreehost.com/crap/your-god-damn-header.swf and not http://reallystingyhosting.com/free-shit/1287192837198237jsdkajdshakd/ )

Once you you've done that, replace the the src to the file address in the following flash embedding code !

<embed bgcolor="'#FFFFFF'" height="'140'" pluginspage="'http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer'" src="'http://somesite.com/yourheader.swf'" type="'application/x-shockwave-flash'" width="'700'/"></embed>

Dont forget the /> at the end
Keep the width less than that in Step 4 and now keep the code handy (Copy to clipboard would be good)

Step 10

The moment of truth. Now its a good time to have that coke cuz don't mess up this step

Search the template for "!--Show just the image, no text-- "

Now replace the selected block of code with the flash embed code from step 9

Now press preview. If every thing is ok then click Save Template

With a flash header in blogger you can add menus, search box, mouse over effects including sound. Best of all looks non-template and alive !

Troubleshooting
Now for all those people who screwed up. Most likely you will get this message

We were unable to preview your template

Please correct the error below, and submit your template again.

Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.

This will be followed by the xml error message like this

XML error message: The element type "embed" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "".

Check out what the message states and act accordingly. Most likely you might have missed a tag or deleted something.
You can always copy the original template which you had saved in Step 3 and start all over again.

Might think the title is about a Rock star but I am talking about Overclocking , in noob terms it is your system on tubocharger !

Over clocking simply means running your system at a higher Clock rate than it is specified by the manufacturer. The fact is the components such as processor, graphic cards are capable of much better performance but in doing so they may loose stability or have a shorter life span.

So what does it mean for you and me, by overclocking a cheaper system can work at par to a much high end configuration kinda like a Mini configured to go as faster as a ferrari.

Many hard-core gamers and PC geeks regularly do overclock their system to give them the best possible system.

Before you restart the system to overclock for your BIOS read this first !

• Over clocking voids your warranty, even thought the companies kinda themself encourage to overclock as Tom's hardware points out
• Overclocking if not done properly can mean goodbye to your system.
• It generates a lot of heat so you need extra cooling systems
• Can also cause data corruption.

Microsoft Genuine Advantage a Joke ?

Now blogosphere was buzzing with Microsoft Genuine test passing a Ubuntu Os as Genuine Windows.

Makes us wonder the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Test is a Micro Joke or a poker bluff ?

A week ago a friend wanted to install Safari when he got the nice surprise, Safari Require Windows Installer 3 and to download Installer 3 requires the MGA(Microsoft Genuine Advantage) Verification and there was now way he could do that !

All hopes of surfing on a Apple technology was lost.

Always looking forward to a good hack I wanted to test all the "Bypass microsoft genuine test" available on the internet, most of which outdated which works on disabling activex.

When everything failed, I proceeded to see what are the steps of the test. Here is what happened.

Step 1

You get a button which starts the validation process.


Once clicked it takes you Windows Genuine Advantage plug-in installation Page

Step 2

At this page skip download of "Download Plug-in". Do not Install this




Scroll Down the page untill you get Try the alternate validation method

Click this link.


Step 3

This will take you to the Genuine Windows Validation Continued page. In this page first under the run validation tool Click Continue



This will cause you default download manager (DAP in my case) to prompt you to download Genuine check.exe




Step 4

I downloaded the exe and ran Genuine check.exe, which will give a code as shown below
Enter this code in the input box below in that page





Step 4

Click Validate !

Step 5

Success !

We were able to download Windowsn Installer 3 !




It didn't had genuine windows, and yet it worked !

Extremely surprised I download the MGADIAG.exe to check the MGA settting.



It showed the that the validation control was not installed.
