The best FLV player....Yet !
We all love the youtube videos and love them even more when we can download the youtube videos and watch at our leisure ! But playing them is a bit a prob since winamp wont play them (unless you mod it hardcore), next best option was VLC or some FLV player !
Now I came across this damn sweet FLV Player that does pretty much every thing you would want to do !

YouTube launches Film Competition called Project Direct
Youtube finally announced its first film competition called Project Direct partnered by Hp. It will be judged by award-winning filmmaker, Jason Reitman.
If you win, you're going to a major international film festival where you'll attend surprise industry events, meet with executives from Fox Searchlight Pictures, and show your film at a private event. You'll also see your winning short broadcast on the home page of YouTube in countries all over the world, and you'll win a $5000 debit card.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS NOVEMBER 9TH and the CONTEST STARTS AT 7TH OCTOBER.
It is an "International Contest" yet you are eligible only if you are a resident of united States, UK, Brazil, Canada, France, Italy or Spain.

How to Download ?
Now to download You tube videos just add the video id to the above url

The part in red is the video id.
The download link becomes:- http://cache.googlevideo.com/get_video?origin=74.125.15.24&video_id=Y7dpJ0oseIA
Now paste this link in your browser or even better in your Download manager like DAP and Download !!
Now sometimes it may not work cuz Google don't like people downloading copyrighted stuff (if they had liked you wud have seen a download button on youtube long ago) so Google may turn their back to the magic url and you get a fancy error page like this:-

YouTube now to show ads on the videos
The good days of commercial free Video streaming is bygone ! Youtube now to show ads on the videos. After google spent 1.67 big ones to purchase it, it was expected they would monetize youtube more to justify its price tag. According to Wikipedia page on youtube it makes an annual turnover of about 10 Millions while word on the blogosphere put it around 15 which means google has to wait 100 years just to break even !
Now these ads will be an eyesore without a doubt but atleast these ads will be "animated overlays" as they put it and not pre-roll. According to youtubeThese are animated overlays that appear on the bottom 20 percent of a video. If you're interested by what you see there, clicking on the overlay launches a deeper interactive video ad that we think is relevant and entertaining. (The video you were watching is temporarily paused.) If you choose not to click on the overlay, it will simply disappear, so that you're in full control of your YouTube experience.
Already this is creating controversy with the video owners. youtube user irabnut posted a comment on the Youtube blog "That really sucks! i don't want my artistic masterpiece to be filled up with cheesy unrelated ads. The site will become less attractive."
Youtube is already compromising on the video quality to save on bandwidth it is to be seen if this additional income through ads will make it less bandwidth stingy and improve the quality of video.
Will this eyesore make people move to other video sharing sites such as Metacafe (which is offering rewards for video makers) Vimeo , and newly launched Blip.tv ? Only time will tell !

Now Play/stream youtube videos from any point
Youtube has finally done it. The beta all versions of YouTube allows you to stream/play the video from the time you choose from the timeline slider just like the on demand streaming in google videos. That means you can choose to see from the middle or just the end rather than have to wait to download sufficient buffer or the entire video.
Check out the screen shot I played this video from the middle !

This is one of the most awesome feature of the Beta Version. Youtube till now was showing video by bulk download rather than streaming it. This gives an edge over many video services such as Metacafe is which still this feature is not available.
